American Legion Post Program Summary

American Legion Auxiliary

Purpose: The American Legion Auxiliary is a partner organization supporting the American Legion’s mission to serve veterans, military personnel, and their families. It emphasizes community service, patriotism, and advocacy for veterans’ needs.

Activities:

  • Volunteer at VA hospitals and veterans’ homes.

Baseball

Purpose: The American Legion Baseball program promotes sportsmanship, physical fitness, and teamwork while fostering community pride and engagement among youth.

  • Host local, regional, and national tournaments culminating in the American Legion Baseball World Series.
  • Provide opportunities for players to earn scholarships and gain exposure for college and professional recruitment.

Boys State

Purpose: Boys State is a leadership and citizenship program designed to educate young men about the inner workings of government and civic responsibility.

Activities:

  • Participants engage in a week-long immersive program creating mock governments at city, county, and state levels.
  • Host debates, elections, and legislative sessions to mirror real-world processes.
  • Provide opportunities to hear from government officials and civic leaders.
  • Promote leadership development and teamwork, with an emphasis on public speaking and collaborative decision-making.
  • Outstanding participants can advance to Boys Nation in Washington, D.C.

Legion Riders

Purpose: The Legion Riders program unites motorcycle enthusiasts to support American Legion initiatives, with a focus on raising awareness and funds for veterans and community programs.

Activities:

  • Organize charity rides, such as the annual Legacy Run, which funds scholarships for children of fallen service members.
  • Conduct flag lines and escorts for veterans’ funerals.
  • Host fundraising events for local and national causes, including veterans’ homes and rehabilitation centers.
  • Foster camaraderie and fellowship among members while promoting patriotism.

Oratorical Contest

Purpose: The American Legion Oratorical Contest develops knowledge of the U.S. Constitution and enhances public speaking skills among high school students.

Activities:

  • Participants deliver prepared orations and impromptu speeches on constitutional topics.
  • Competitions progress from local to state and national levels, offering substantial scholarships for winners.
  • Promote understanding of civic rights and responsibilities.
  • Encourage youth to engage with and reflect on the principles of democracy and governance.

The American Legion is a U.S.-based veterans’ organization established to serve those who have served in the armed forces. It was founded on March 15-17, 1919, during a caucus in Paris, France, by members of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) who had served in World War I.
